An indicator based on the effect on the ecological network of the bee decline.

Issue: No agreed upon headline indicator for BD decline.

Key Observation: Rather than quantifiying single entities (e.g. species) consider networks.

Bee equivalent: We build an indicator based on the effect on the ecological network of the bee decline. This puts into focus the complex relationships in nature which provide the ecological services as an interconnected whole. It is quite straightforward to exemplify the influence of different human activities (pesticides, mono cultures etc.) and the ecological consequences of it and there is generally a good initial understanding on this with regard to bees in the wider public.

Multiple factors can lead to bee extinction. This factors can be aggregated.

Example: Substitution of habitat in agricultural environment with urban habibats. Urban gardening has a positive bee equivalent.

How: Citizen science platform which collects data on these dependency networks
- aggregates, integrates, interlinks
- provides good visualisations and navigations.
- provides links to solutions

The platform is managed by IPBES, which organizes the scientific development of the platform.
Every nation has its scientists that have the lead in this respect and are responsible for the transfer of the relevant data to the platform (e.g. actual abundance data and scientifically grounded relationships between species/ecosystems).

Side effect: Strenghtening the visibility and the impact of IPBES.
