Group 1

In 2045, we would like the UK’s role in the world to be a strong, medium power which prioritises community and justice, and promotes climate change mitigation policy, education policy and social policy at home and abroad.

In order to ‘get there’, the UK would need to from 2020, adopt a bottom up approach to politics, increase political education from a younger age and increased MP involvement in local communities. From 2030, increase the number of citizens assemblies and redesign communities to focus foreign policy at the city level.

To achieve this 2045 vision, the UK should also do:

More:

  • investment in education
  • Emphasis on cities where there is room for innovation
  • Facilitation of citizens assemblies and conversations
  • Clarity on values, establish a matrix of domestic values to take into foreign policy decisions and forums.

Less:

  • Dependency on a major powers - find a speciality, be a neutral power (eg Switzerland)

Underpinning this vision for the UK’s future role in the world would be these 5 key principles of future national strategy . If we were National Security Adviser, these 5 principles would be the basis of all our strategic thinking about future national strategy.

They are:

1. To consolidate a middle / facilitator/ neutral status

2. Crystalise an area of strength or international focus (work/environment)

3. Invest in education and social justice and equality

4. Grassroots democracy - bottom up approach

5. Increase the role of cities/regions
