Context writing: Where is Rose, what does her world look like in 2050?

Rose splits her time between Africa, North America and Europe. Rose has a Foundation in the area of children protection and aims to help youth in education and health. Because of her work, different universities and enterprises sponsor her visas as she is also working with them as a research fellow or as an associate on projects. Flight and other high speed modes of travel have become more accessible and cheaper due to technological advances. She wants in her work to build bridges in order to bring cultural awareness and bring people together. In 2050 she can easily do so as countries from the East and South are well represented in many international organisations and institutions and there are many programs promoting exchange between the different regions.  By 2050 the worst effects of climate change that were predicted in 2021 if people did not make changes have been mitigated and avoided.

Biography of Rose

Decade 2020-30 (Rose 24-34)

What is the development of the drivers at this point and what is the effect on the migration pattern for Rose?

In 2021 Rose moved to America for University which was possible due to sponsorship. during her University time she became aware of how climate change affected farmers and families especially youth because of the lack of crops. Therefore she decided to create the foundation in order to help people. As China invested heavily in different areas of development, including research on climate change and ways to mitigate it, Rose decided to do an exchange at a Chinese university to benefit from the programs in that area. Rose studied sustainable development and completed her Master degree in 2023 and started her foundation. Due to the increase in remote work Rose was able to connect with stakeholders in several countries to learn about the issues facing young people from climate change. She also worked there with both Kenyan and Somalian Diaspora in the US to build effort together and provide resources to achieve her goals.

Decade 2030-40 (Rose 34-44)

What is the development of the drivers at this point and what is the effect on the migration pattern for Rose?

The increasing influence of the global East and South had led to collaboration between all countries in an equal capacity enabling governments to focus on climate change and the development goals. That's why she was working on five different continents and met her future partner during a global conference on climate action in Mexico. The roadmap set out during the conference had the main objective of identifying ways to get different stakeholders, including states, companies, banks etc. to invest funds in climate action and the development of scientific and technological solutions to climate change.

Decade 2040-50 (Rose 44-54)

What is the development of the drivers at this point and what is the effect on the migration pattern for Rose?

Due to this collaboration, investment in scientific and technological solutions to climate change yielded significant advances, this highly influenced Rose's work as she was a key player in facilitation. Considering this development, Rose felt more optimistic towards the future at the beginning of 2040 and decided to have children, which wasn't a problem because she froze her eggs during the previous decade and pregnancy at a later age had become much safer due to advances in medicine. The rise of remote work enabled Rose to work and her children to study remotely, however she chose to travel for work and to enable her children to have cultural experiences. Rose realised working on the climate change issues that politics had an important role in the fight against challenges of climate change by creating new policy and educating the population. Because of the changing nature of work, her career was not affected aversely by her having children but instead she continued throughout this decade to work with many stakeholders across the world and grow her foundation.

Changing Nature of Work

  • Diplomas becoming more important --> migrating for educational opportunities
  • Moving to places with more job opportunities (high unemployment vs low) more normalized
  • Remote work becoming more popular and more accessible/feasible--> possibly less migration
  • Expectations of the job (is it fulfilling? does it add value? Thought stems from privilege/opportunity --> ex: Rose--educated background, aims to use education as a means to an end)
  • A trend towards more diverse workplaces (needs methods of integration)
    • companies looking for more multilingualism/English

Expanding Influence of East and South

  • Growing influence of African enterprise - reason for Rose to migrate within or migrate back to Africa? The accessibility of the African continent might mean she will migrate within the continent.
    • A lot of investment from China - with maybe dwindling influence from the West or maybe the West will try to invest more? 2050 perspective interesting.
  • Since she wants to be an entrepreneur and researcher, there will be many opportunities in Africa - maybe more than elsewhere?
    • Maybe depends on what kind of research? From where can she best achieve her goal of giving back to her community in Kenya and Somalia, from abroad or from Kenya and Somalia?
  • It will become easier for her to migrate as Kenya becomes a more powerful player in Geopolitics
